Family Guy became so popular because many people are crude and insensitive and they like to see that there are characters in this world that hold the same values and stereotypical ideas they do, even if they are cartoon characters. The stories often make fun of all sorts of different people and ideas, including politicians, religions, homosexuality and other sensitive cultural topics.

So, people who also are against some of these topics find the humor funny because it is often forbidden for them to express opposition to these topics in general society so they like that they can watch it on TV.
