The Upside Down is an alternate dimension that is parallel to the human world. This is a place that is linked with all of the other items that can be seen on earth. This is supposed to be an alternative universe that is meant to stay closed forever.
The problem has occurred when the alternate universe has opened and it managed to make a Demogorgon, a monster that can be found in this universe, to appear on earth and spread its toxicity all around. It was a good thing that the gate to this universe eventually became closed so the dimension’s connection to the area was also cut.
