Atreus is the son of Faye and Kratos. His mother taught him all about the Norse gods and myths. Atreus accompanies his father on a journey to spread his mother’s ashes at the top of the highest peak in all the realms. Faye wanted to name Atreus Loki, but Kratos his father chose his given name based on a Spartan warrior he knew. However, Atreus is open up to the possibilities based on Norse myth since her mother given name is Loki and Loki is the father of the World Serpent. This explains why the World Serpent recognizes Atreus during their journey. Since the World Serpent was sent back in time during its fight with Thor, it is possible that Atreus will grow up to create the World Serpent in this timeline.
