When a body part is lost, such as a leg as result of a land mine, or when it is removed perhaps because it is gangrenous and will infect the rest of the body, then there is every effort for a replacement to be provided. A false appendage to be used as a replacement is called a prosthesis. You can have soft prostheses, for instance after breast cancer, a replacement breast is possible.
