If we drop an object downwards and nothing impedes its falling journey its speed will increase as it falls. This is called gravitational acceleration, because it is gravity that is causing the object to reach the ground, or nearest flat surface.

Things fall because of the gravity. Thus, objects dropped gain speed approximately10m/s in a second while falling because of the gravitation.
