This is part of a quotation from To Kill a Mockingbird and the character speaking is Atticus Finch. He has a distinctive 'voice' or style of speaking and his message is neatly put so it does not sound like preaching. However, it is little different from a minister advising us to 'stand in a person's shoes' before we judge, or in order to understand their actions.
