Machu Pichu is one of the most historic places on the planet. Many people have heard of this place where the Incas lived. It still stands today on a mountain where many people go to visit it. The mountain that it sits on is called the same name, Machu Pichu. It is closest to the city of Cusco and is located south of the equator. It stands 11,800 feet above sea level.
There are many “buildings” on Machu Pichu but they appear to be in ruins. Many Incans were known to have lived here and they developed and invented many things including highways and they traveled a lot. The Incas lived their lives here in the mountains near what is now Peru.
Machu Picchu is a well-known Incan citadel that was built on a mountain ridge and is 7,970 feet above sea level. This ancient is believed to have been built as an estate for the emperor Pachacuti around 1450 but abandoned it around the time of the Spanish conquest. Machu Picchu was built in traditional Incan style with white washed walls and about 30% was restored starting in 1976. It continues to be restored today.
It is located in the Cuzco Region of the Machupicchu Province in Peru and is considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site as of 1983. It has also been voted as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World which means it is becoming increasingly popular amongst tourists.
