The independent variable is independent because it does not rely on other factors. For instance, your hair colour will not change as result of fast running, but your blood pressure or cheek colour might. The controlled variable is one you have under your control, such as the length of road to be run. The dependent variable is the one you are interested in, and are therefore measuring.
