Iron is an example of transition metals. This set of elements are known for having variable valency. The reason why transition elements like iron have variable valency is that the electrons in their d-orbitals can also be used for bonding.

That is possible because the difference in the energy level of d-orbitals and s-orbitals is negligible. As a result, the electrons in the incomplete d-shell can be used for bonding. In the case of iron, it has the atomic configuration of 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d6 4s2. However, it will first use the two electrons in the 4s orbital for bonding, meaning it has lost two of its electrons.

At this point, the atomic configuration of 1s2 2s2 2p6 3s2 3p6 3d6 shows that it has donated two electrons. Also, iron can decide to donate three electrons, meaning one of the electrons in the 3d orbital will be part of the three electrons to be donated. That is why Iron has oxidation states of +2 and +3.

It occurs when the d-orbitals lose valence electrons, and then they form bonds with different types of elements. Another reason why these metals have variable valency is that they have different electronic numbers.

For example, ions can have oxidation numbers that are +3 or +2, which will depend on the energy that is the orbital of the ion. To represent variable valency, the element would have a Roman numeral that is used as a subscript, and it would be next to the element symbol. An example is PVCl5.

The best way to understand what variable valency is is to gain knowledge about the valency of an atom. Orbiting electrons are outside of the nucleus of an atom. The electrons that orbits are looking to donate or accept electrons. The electrons that are either given away or obtained are for the purpose of becoming more stable. There are many transitional metals that have variable valency, including iron, tin, nickel, and copper.

With iron, it loses three electrons. These electrons then will form a bond with oxygen that is ionic. This, in turn, creates the compound, which goes by the name of ferric oxide.

There are different metals that are available that will be able to exhibit variable valency. Some of these metals are tin, copper, lead, iron, lead. The metals will donate electrons from their valence shell. By doing this, they will be able to create positively charged ions.

The main reason why some metals will be able to show valency easily is due to the involvement of the d−orbitals. This will make the different electrons that can be found in the outermost shells to become involved in the whole reaction. The electronic configurations of the metals will make a lot of difference for sure.

That is why iron can have oxidation numbers of +2 and +3. This can be attributed to the energy difference between their orbitals. Another reason why some elements show variable valency is because of the difference in their electronic configurations. This is why, in a particular group, you might notice a progressive decrease in the oxidation number.

To be clear, valency is how many hydrogen atoms can combine or displace one of the atoms to form a compound. The combination or sharing of electrons in different proportions depends on the nature of the reaction.

For example, iron combines with oxygen to form ferrous oxide as well as ferric oxide. This is termed variable valency. In the case of transitional metals, these have variable valency because some elements can have more than one valency.

To understand variable valency it helps to first understand what is meant by an atom’s valency. Outside an atom’s nucleus are orbiting electrons, looking to accept or donate one or more of its electrons in order to achieve a more stable state. Transition metals, such as nickel, copper, tin, and iron exhibit variable valency.

Looking at iron as an example, when iron loses three electrons to form an ionic bond with oxygen, the compound formed is called ferric oxide. Iron can also lose two electrons to form an ionic bond with oxygen to form ferrous oxide. Calling iron compounds by the words ferric and ferrous are derived from the Latin name for iron, which is ferrum.
