The correct answer to this question is D. Australia, or officially the Commonwealth of Australia, is the smallest continent, with a land mass of 2.97 million square miles. Australia is the 6th largest country in the world, following Russia, Canada, China, the United States of America, and Brazil, but it is the smallest continental land mass, at only five percent of the world's land area (149.45 million square miles). Although it is the smallest continent, Australia is known as the world's largest island. The country of Australia also comprises the island of Tasmania and a number of other small islands.
