Facebook can definitely be detrimental to your self-esteem, but only if you let it be so. Before all the social media websites, there was an old saying “Keep up with the Joneses”. This was the name of an early 20th century American comic strip about how people tried to match their neighbors spending habits and social status. For those people who try to keep up with their Facebook friends or snap chatters on Snapchat, it’s very easy to get depressed when you see others getting what you haven’t yet achieved in your life.

For example, you may be waiting to get accepted into an Ivy League school, get married, have a child, or buy a new car. Just stop comparing yourself to others and your self-esteem will thank you for it. You are perfect the way you are and you should accept it. Don't let a social media website belittle you or your self-esteem.
