The devil and tom walker is a short story based on a greedy couple. Washington Irving wrote the story. The story starts with a pirate named Kidd who made a deal with the devil to protect his treasure. However, he died and could never come back to claim his treasure.

Unfortunately, the devil did not break the promise and he continued to protect the money. Initially tom finds about the treasure and talks to the devil who asks for his soul in exchange for the treasure. He goes to tell his wife. However, the couple is always fighting, as there are a number of places in the book where the author says that they are not on the best of terms.
