The Battle of Normandy probably was one of the most decisive battles in the Allied mission to re-conquer Europe. However, it is difficult to point to just one battle. Some historians believe the Battle of Britain was the most decisive battle of World War II. If Hitler’s army had succeeded in destroying Britain, Hitler would then have been in a position to concentrate his forces on the Soviet Union.

The strategic importance of the British Isles to serve as a staging point for the invasion at Normandy is undeniably important. After winning the Battle of Britain, Britain successfully rebuilt its military equipment and was able to once again serve as an Allied pillar of support.
