The correct answer to this question is Project Mercury. The purpose of this program was to help the United States enter the space race. The main purpose was to be able to put a man in space. At the same time, the United States was doing this; the Soviet Union was as well.

The Soviet Union was trying to win the overall race by putting many people into space as possible, for the purpose of discovering as many space elements as they can. Then came the Apollo 11 mission, which was launched by NASA in 1969. Three astronauts went to the moon to analyze rocks that were on the moon.

The NASA space program that made the foundation for Apollo 11 mission was the Apollo program, which is also known as Project Apollo. This program took place between the year 1969 to 1972, and it was the first program that successfully landed a man on the moon.

It was also the United States of America's third human spaceflight program that was carried out by the NASA -National Aeronautics and Space Administration. This was first conceived during the administration of Dwight D. Eisenhower as a spacecraft containing three persons, which was to follow the project mercury that involving only one person. This was the program that landed the first American in space.

The Apollo project was actually a national goal for John F. Kennedy in the year 1960. He made this known to congress on the 25th May 1961 to land a man on the moon, and also bring him back to the earth safely. This 3rd US human spaceflight was preceded by the Gemini project which extends the capability for Apollo's spaceflight.

Apollo 11 is already the third program that was created by the United States to hopefully take astronauts to outer space. The first program was called “Project Mercury.” The second one was called “Project Gemini.” Project Gemini was created in the year 1961 to make Apollo 11 more capable and successful.

The goal was to finally make it successful enough for people to actually land on the moon and this was something that was done by Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin when they finally landed the LM or the Lunar Module on the surface. There were a lot of mishaps that also happened during the entire project but people knew what they were getting into.

The space shuttle was known as the Columbia. Project Mercury was a space program that was created through NASA in order for the United States to participate in the space race. Specifically, they wanted to put a man into space. The Soviet Union was doing the same thing. They were trying to win the Space Race by putting as many people into space and to discover as many space things as possible.
