Charles Babbage was a mathematician, philosopher, and an engineer. He invented the concept of digital programmable computers. He created the first computer, which he called "the difference engine." It was produced in 1822, and it was the size of a house, although it could only hold one program. It was powered by steam, and it could even print, and he worked on it for ten years.

He began to make the first general-purpose computer called "the analytical engine." They couldn't build the machines because they didn't have the funding, which made people believe Babbage was crazy, and he lost his credibility. It was an issue of having the right idea at the wrong time. When they were finally able to build it, they discovered it worked remarkably well.

Someone needs to find a source for the claim that Babbage invented standard railroad gauge. Babbage’s name has never shown up in any of the railroad books. It has been stated anyone didn't develop the standard gauge, but it was a standard width used for horse-drawn railways in the mining area where railway engines were being made.

What removes Babbage from being the father of the computer is that he did not build one, and there is not much lineage to his work. There is no recognized father of computing machines.

Babbage was born long ago in 1792. It is hard to believe that computers were even in existence during the 1800s, but Babbage is credited with that. However, since computers have emerged to great things due to more recent inventors in the computer science and technology industry, Babbage’s name has drifted away due to Bill Gates and Steve Jobs.
