The answer to this question is subjective. Some people does not believe in the quote by Henry Van Dyke, “It is not the gift, but the thought that counts.” But the majority of the people believe that what is important is really the thought that was exerted rather than the actual gift itself.

For example, a person who gave you a present during your birthday may or may not give you something that you really wanted. Even if that happens, it is still heartwarming to know that he or she remembered your birthday and put some effort in buying you a present. For me, it’s really the thought that counts because I’d rather have people who care than gifts from people who just gave you presents just for the heck of it.
