Ethnic group shares biology, history, cultural practices, and originally it would share religion and beliefs. With the spread of education, differences emerge in beliefs and then practices. With intermarriage, the genetic make-up inevitably changes too.
Even now DNA examination shows traces of very different ethnic heritage in individuals who seem wholly representative of one particular ethnic group. We are becoming, little by little, one group, although this will take millenia rather than generations.
