Colonel Baldwin B. Smith was selected to become the commander of General Dwight Eisenhower's personal security force during World War II. Colonel Smith was party selected because he closely resembled Eisenhower. When word of a German plot to assassinate Eisenhower was discovered, Baldwin volunteered to be a decoy.

He rode “in the supreme commander’s automobile trips between St. Germaine and Versailles, France,” until the plot was later found to be a hoax.
