Temperature Questions and Answers (Q&A)

The process of hot rolling encompasses rolling steel at a temperature above the steel’s recrystallization temperature, which takes place over 1,700 degrees Fahrenheit. Steel that is above the recrystallization temperature can be molded and formed more easily than colder steel, and the steel can start in much larger sizes. It is also cheaper to manufacture than cold rolled steel and is produced without pauses or delays during the process, so the steel doesn’t need to be reheated.

The hot rolled steel will shrink during the process, and the size and shape of steel will be less predictable than cold-rolled steel. Cold-rolled steel is manufactured at temperatures below the recrystallization temperature, which is usually around room temperature.

Pyrex is the brand name for a well-loved heat resistant glassware product, introduced by the Corning company 100 years ago. Today Pyrex is typically utilized in the lab with test tubes, dishes, and beakers. Pyrex is used in the kitchen for baking, stovetop cooking, and utensils, including mixing bowls and storage containers. Pure Glass is not as sturdy as Pyrex because Pyrex is four to six times tougher with a granular breaking pattern.

Regular Glass is not made for abrupt changes in temperature, and Pyrex can tolerate temperature changes, so says their tag line, "from the freezer to the oven, to the table." A glass of all types, including Pyrex, made for baking, can not be used on direct flame or heating sources. There is Pyrex that may be used on top of the stove for cooking and coffee making. The main difference between Pyrex and Glass is that Pyrex is tempered Glass and used for cookware. Glass is used for architecture and furniture.

In the winter, you may check the weather often to see how low the temperature is going to go. If you realized that the temperature was slightly warmer, you might be excited that you don’t have a freezing day ahead of you. However, that can be ruined by the wind chill. Due to the windy weather, it will seem much colder than the temperature is reading from the thermometer.

Both measure temperature to an extent. However, the temperature is the actual measurement of how hot or cold it is by using a measuring device. It gives an accurate reading. Wind chill, on the other hand, is the temperature that is believed to be, or it is felt to be that temperature.

There are many differences between extensive and intensive properties. An extensive property is one in which it changes depending upon the size or amount of material it affects. An intensive property does not change due to the amount or size of the material. The intensive properties really don’t change; they remain the same. The extensive properties do change.

Intensive properties will have the same results test after test whereas the extensive properties will have different results test after test. Some examples of intensive properties include color, smell, and boiling points. Some examples of extensive properties include mass, length and height. If you think about height, it changes with size. That is, the measurement gets larger when someone grows taller. Colors do not change with size.

We all already know as standard knowledge that mixing hot water with cold water will raise the temperature and that the opposite applies as well, mixing cold water with hot water will lower the temperature. If water that is 40 degrees celsius is mixed with water that is 20 degrees celsius then the final temperature of the water containing both the warmer water and the cooler water would be at or about 30 degrees celsius.

The temperature between 40 and 20 would be 30 if one cooled the other the same amount that the other one warmed it. Both amounts of water would need to equal each other or the results could differ.

The temperature at which a fat begins to break down and burn is called the Smoking Point. Different fats and oils will have different smoking points. The refinement levels of different fats also play a role in determining the smoking point.

The smoking point will be much lower than what is called the flash point when fats or oils can catch fire if there was a fire source nearby. It is important when cooking that you pay attention to the smoking point of whichever oil you are cooking with and ensure that it does not go too high.

Heat and temperature are related to each other, but you should not think that they are the same. You should remember that temperature may refer not only to heat but also to the cold. The temperature will let you know how hot or how cold the current environment is or the object that you are holding is.

Without temperature, you may just need to base it on how you are feeling. Heat obviously refers to the energy of an object or substance. There are some compounds that will give a heat reaction because of what they will be exposed to mixed to. Heat is constantly being transported from one object to another.
