School Shooting Questions and Answers (Q&A)

I believe that there are a larger number of mass shootings in schools and colleges due to the people wanting to copycat what they see on television. These people see that the shooters are becoming famous because people now see the shooter’s face and name on the television many times.

People think that they will be famous and want their fifteen minutes of fame without realizing that they are really going to prison for a long time or they will get the death penalty. Also, I do think that there were many shootings and violence at school in the past, but I think that it was not publicized like it is today. It would not have made national news or have received as much attention as it does today. So, it seems that there are more shootings today.

Adam Lanza had killed his mother before perpetrating the Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting. There are many reasons for his actions but according to his autopsy, the deterioration of his mental health coupled with anorexia and an atypical preoccupation with violence were the primary reasons.

Lanza was suffering from Asperger's syndrome and OCD. He was also a patient of anxiety, hence lonely and isolated. His mother had plans for him to move out of Sandy Hook and buy him an RV. According to the psychiatrist, this must have caused him to go violent and his inability to control his actions added to the deadly presence of a semi-automatic gun caused the entire problem. He targeted Sandy Hook because he was a past student there and hence knew the place. The cause of Lanza committing suicide is still up or debate.

I do not believe that teachers should be armed to avert school shootings. If teachers are armed, this presents an opportunity for disturbed students to access the guns when a teacher is caught off-guard. It also presents an opportunity for teachers themselves to engage in a shooting if they are disturbed.

Also, teachers are not trained to respond to an active shooter and cannot be relied upon to accurately target an active shooter.

There is no one accepted definition of a mass shooting, however there do not need to be any casualties for an event to be considered a mass shooting. Some people define a mass shooting as an event in which multiple people are injured from firearms.

Other people define it as an event in which there was a public intentional shooting, regardless of whether or not people were killed or injured. Most people agree that any public intentional shooting in which more than one person is injured is considered a mass shooting. That could be as little as two people injured.

It is difficult to say what is driving the mass shootings in the United States because there are rules about how gun violence is studied. Without adequate statistics or studies we can only guess about what is causing gun violence.

It is true that there are more guns per capita in the United States compared to other countries, and there are less restrictive guns laws in the United States. Every country has mental illness but not every country allows mentally ill people to access guns, especially assault rifles.

The gun culture in the United States definitely plays a part in the recent shootings. These shootings however, are not unprecedented. Mass shootings have been happening in the United States for decades. They are receiving more attention now because they are becoming more deadly now that more people have access to more deadly weapons.

Mental illness will always exist, but when you combine mental illness to widespread access to deadly weapons, that is the recipe for disaster.
