Ocean Questions and Answers (Q&A)

R. Barnes

I am a nature lover.

Ocean and Sea are the largest bodies of water know the landmass. As thought by geography, a sea is not as big as an ocean. As a matter of fact, an ocean is a combination of seawater bodies. Even the largest sea which is the Mediterranean Sea of about 1,144,800 square miles in total area is smaller than the largest ocean with is the Arctic ocean of about 5,427,000 square miles in total area.

In addition, oceans are usually lower in-depth than the sea, probably because the sea is closer to the land. The closer part of the sea to the land can also allow for the survival of some plants and animals, while only a few organisms can survive in the ocean. The pressure in the ocean is higher than that of the sea, and the ocean is very with the absence of any sunlight penetration. There exist only five oceans in the whole wide world, while there are actually dozens of sea bodies around the world.

Oceans and bays are enormous bodies of water. Oceans are the most substantial water bodies on the globe; however, a bay is a form of water area that is bordered by land. Generally, a bay is a water body that is surrounded by land on three sides. Five oceans cover about 71% of the earth's surface. Bays are often an inlet in a lake or a more extensive water body.

As the bay is enclosed by land, one can come across calmer water than the oceans. Large bays can be called sea, gulf, bight, or sound, and the smaller bays can be called fjords. Oceans have more depth than the bay. The major bodies of oceans are the Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Arctic. On the other hand, there are numerous bays, and two of the well- known bays are Hudson Bay and Bay of the Bengal. Oceans possess higher waves than bays.

The Panama Canal lets ship pass through the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean. Principal planning and construction of the Panama Canal began in 1881, but it was untimely put on hold due to engineering problems and high mortality rate. It wasn’t until Panama became an independent country in 1903 did the United States of America start to take over the project. Construction resumed in 1904 and it officially opened on August 15, 1914.

Before the Panama Canal was constructed, ships coming from the Atlantic Ocean had to travel around the southern tip of South America just to get to the Pacific Ocean. However, when the project was completed, it shortened the journey to eight to ten hours or by about 11,000 kilometers.
