Linguistics Questions and Answers (Q&A)

The answer is C. A phoneme is the basic unit of sound, whereas a morpheme is the basic unit of meaning. In any dialect or language, a phoneme is the smallest sound used to provide meaningful differences between words and speech.

Phonemes are a group of sounds which vary slightly. A common example of a phoneme is the k sound heard in words like skill and skit. Another common example is the p in pat and pad. These sounds help to differentiate each word in different languages.
