The Berlin conference took place in 1884-1885 and was also known as the Congo conference and the West Africa conference. The purpose was to regulate European colonization and trade in Africa during the New Imperialism period.

Coincidentally this period of time was also a time when Germany was just suddenly emerging as an Imperial power. The conference was organized by the first Chancellor of Germany, Otto Von Bismarck. The result of the conference can easily be seen as the beginning of the European scramble for Africa in which European countries were all looking to colonize Africa.

Education and literacy rates improved in countries such as Africa and India. In both countries, schools and hospitals were built, and factories were set up, which increased job opportunities. Unemployment declined, and people in those regions were able to integrate things such as technology into their lifestyle.

Imperialism operates from the center, is a state policy and is developed for ideological and financial reasons. Colonialism is merely the development for settlement or commercial intentions. Imperialism involves the practice, theory, and attitudes of a dominating metropolitan center ruling a distant territory, while colonialism refers to the implanting of settlements.

Imperialism includes some form of colonialism, but colonialism itself does not automatically imply imperialism, as colonialism lacks focus. European industrializing nations engaged in colonizing, influencing and annexing other parts of the world. Imperialists saw the economic benefits in the production of materials. Resources were made available by imperialism, and the world's economy grew significantly and became much more interconnected, which made the imperial powers very rich and prosperous.

The general idea is to obtain more land, resources, and power. The attitude of the exploiter is usually selfish and arrogant.

Overall, global attitudes toward the US are positive. Unfortunately, there are those who consider Americans to be pompous and self-centered. The way the US is depicted in the media is also a contributing factor in how other countries perceive Americans. Some foreigners also see Americans as being aggressive, violent, uneducated and crude. America often shocks other nations with its populist cultural response to money.
