Books were once rare and expensive and only the elites or scholars had access to them. Since the printing press, at least, they have become widely available and many people find them to be valuable in their lives. Books can be used for information as well as to stimulate the imagination. Books are also good because they encourage deep thinking. A lot of online information transfer is shallow and superficial. Books, which are generally hundreds of pages, allow more space to develop ideas and require more deep thinking.
As a result, it is useful to read books because they can help us become deep thinkers. Also, books are valuable because they provide a back up in the case of a digital dark age in which all digital information is lost. If this happens, then books will become very important for preserving our knowledge of history, science, the arts, and other realms of human knowledge. Books are also a good way to absorb information while not being in front of a screen and thus is a break for the eyes.
Paperback books are made to be cheap. They usually have a thin card-like or paper covering. These covers are inexpensive, but they are more prone to bending, tearing, and becoming mangled with time. Hardcover books are built to be more durable. Their covers are resistant to being bent or torn. They also usually come with a dust cover or a dust jacket to protect the book from wear and tear. Hardcover books, as a result, tend to be more expensive.
If you want a book that you are probably going to read again and use as a reference or want to keep around possibly for others to read such as children, friends, or students, a hardcover is a good choice even though it is expensive.
For a book that you are probably only going to read once and don’t care if it gets passed on, a paperback book would probably be most ideal since it is less expensive.
Effective reading refers to critical reading which is important in academic writing. This kind of reading is not just to gain factual information. The purpose of this kind of reading is always to interpret and analyze. You are never to just take an academic passage as given but are to dissect it and draw out and analyze the ideas and evaluate whether they are valid or sound.
This kind of critical reading requires critical thinking which necessitates being able to logically take apart of ideas and their arguments and consider whether they make sense. An argument will be logically valid if its premises lead to its conclusion and sound if the premises are true.
Effective reading is important in an academic setting and is what students are supposed to learn in English class and be able to apply and practice in other subjects whether it be science, history, mathematics, or some other discipline.

The Odd Egg is a children’s book written by author Emily Gravett. The first line of the book says, “All the birds had laid an egg.” However, it is soon discovered that the duck is the odd bird out as it has not laid an egg. The duck finds an egg instead and it quite happy about it. The other birds think the egg the duck has found is an odd egg indeed.
The other birds ridicule the duck for the odd egg she has found but she gives the egg all of her love and nurtures and protects it as though she has laid it herself. The ending of the book is controversial to many because the creature inside the egg the duck has nurtured turns out to be a quite scary creature that frightens and perhaps even eats the other birds that have hatched.

Another one is Drive, by Daniel H. Pink, which talks about what Pink believes truly motivates humans including self-actualization, need for autonomy, and service to others.
