A safety valve is clamped or part of a hydraulic system. For example, one might be installed somewhere in a hydraulic plant. This system in a sense monitors the pressure in this part of the pipes. If the pressure becomes too much and reaches a certain preset point, the valve will open in order to release the pressure.

Otherwise, the system could burst by damaging property and possibly causing injury to those people who are in close proximity to this valve. Instead of pressure, the valve could also monitor temperature and if the temperature got too extreme, the safety valve would react. Boilers are a key place to see a safety valve and as a matter of fact that is where safety valves were first placed when they were invented.
