Welcome to the Microsoft Certification School at ProProfs! Microsoft offers several lines of certification in areas such as network administration, systems engineering, and even database programming. Microsoft certifications are universally recognized as indicative of a technician's skills and are highly regarded within the technical arena. Here you can find guides on the different certifications required for earning MCP, MCSA, MCSE, and various other certifications. These certifications are universally recognized as the standards for Microsoft products and are very well-known throughout the entire technician industry. In addition to our guides, we also offer original study content such as flash cards and quizzes to help better prepare you for the challenges of Microsoft certification. You can also find information regarding how to excel on the certification exams and past tips in the forums, which are widely read and contain valuable tips and tricks from past exams. The MCSA and MCSE are both universally recognized certifications in the computer technician industry. They are also virtual requirements for being a Microsoft network systems administrator and each are basically complimentary to each other. The MCSA is a smaller subset of the MCSE - four exams are required to earn the MCSA while seven exams are required to earn the MCSE. There are both core and elective exams required for the certifications.


Core Exams (Server)

Below is a listing of the core server exams. All of the exams listed below are absolutely required in order to earn the MCSE. Exams denoted by a * are required only to earn the MCSE and not the MCSA.

Microsoft Exam 70-290: Managing and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Environment

Microsoft Exam 70-291: Implementing, Managing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure

Microsoft Exam 70-293: Planning and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure*

Microsoft Exam 70-294: Planning, Implementing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Active Directory Infrastructure*

Core Exams (Client)

For both the MCSE and the MCSA, only one of the following three exams is required.

Microsoft Exam 70-210: Installing, Configuring, and Administering Windows 2000 Professional

Microsoft Exam 70-270: Installing, Configuring, and Administering Windows XP

Microsoft Exam 70-620: TS: Microsoft Windows Vista Client

Design Exam

Only one exam of the following two is required for MCSE; neither are required for the MCSA.

Microsoft Exam 70-297: Designing a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Active Directory and Network Infrastructure

Microsoft Exam 70-298: Designing Security for a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network

Elective Exams

Both the MCSE and MCSA require a single elective exam.

Microsoft Exam 70-284: Managing Exchange Server 2003

The MCDBA is the Microsoft certification for database programming. It covers the Microsoft SQL line of products and includes three core exams and one elective exam.


Core Exams

The core exams are all required for the MCDBA certification. They are listed below. Note that you have a choice between the the exams marked with an asterisk.

Microsoft Exam 70-290: Managing and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Environment*

Microsoft Exam 70-291: Implementing, Managing, and Maintaining a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Network Infrastructure*

Elective Exams

You are required to choose one elective exam in order to earn the MCDBA certification.

The MCDST is Microsoft's equivalent of the popular CompTIA A+ certification as it basically covers the functions of a desktop help desk technician. It consists of two unique core exams, both of which are required:

Microsoft Exam 70-272: Supporting Users and Troubleshooting Desktop Applications on a Microsoft Windows XP Operating System

The MCTS is the Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist certification and is generally regared as a good indicator of a network or systems administrator's prowess in both Microsoft and general technology. The certification requires passing any of the following exams:


Microsoft Exam 70-620: TS: Microsoft Windows Vista Client

Microsoft Exam 70-526: .NET Development

Microsoft Exam 70-536: Terminal Services: Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0 — Application Development Foundation

Microsoft Exam 70-431: TS: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 – Implementation and Maintenance

Microsoft Exam 70-500: TS: Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0, Implementing and Managing

Microsoft Exam 70-501: TS: Windows Server 2003 Hosted Environments, Configuring, and Managing

Microsoft Exam 70-624: TS: Deploying and Maintaining Windows Vista Client and 2007 Microsoft Office System Desktops

Microsoft Exam 70-236: TS: Microsoft Exchange 2007 - Configuration
