[edit section] It's Only the MCSE!
The MCSE certification exams have long been atarget of the contempt of many prospective test-takers. Part of this dislike among those tested is certainly related to the inherent difficulty of the exams, but many of these test-takers rely too heavily on rote memorization of information. The MCSE Windows XP Client exam is not so difficult such that you as a potential test-taker would need to worry about whether you have the ability to pass it or not – you do. The trick lies in the preparation. Our Windows XP guide provides youwith all of the necessary tips and tricks, as well as the core information, required to pass this examination with flying colors.
[edit section] What does the Windows XP exam really cover?
Even "power users" of Windows XP would likely fail the Windows XP examination without any preparation. As its name suggests, the "Microsoft Exam 70–270: Installing, Configuring, and Administering Microsoft Windows XP Professional" test covers much ground that typical users are unlikely to have encountered before. The tested material is decidedly administrative in nature, covering the kinds of tasks that a systems engineer or administrator would normally cover. As such, the 70-270 covers such topics as:
- Streamline the installation of XP over multiple computers
- Manage local security policy
- Ensure performance and reliability on systems
- Maximize efficiency and productivity on XP systems and networks
Ok, so this is starting to sound like a Microsoft advertisement at this point. The point, however, is that the 70-270 certification is no piece of cake and is incredibly comprehensive.
The exam covers analysis first and memorization second. While a number of questions require memorization of the topics and areas tested, you will do best knowing that you are principally covered on your ability to analyze a situation and recommend a relevant conclusion.
[edit section] Why Get Certified?
Although we explore this more in the next article, here are some basic reasons:
- Almost universal recognition from major employers, accredited universities
- Comprehensive nature of the exam demonstrates your knowledge (and helps you learn)
- Part of a greater certification track that is highly respected
[edit section] A Good Starter
Because the MCSE track requires seven certification exams, students often ask us which exam would be a good starting point. As it turns out, the 70-270 (Windows XP) exam is actually an excellent starting point for a number of reasons. First, it covers some of the Microsoft essentials that other MCSE tests will undoubtedly drill you on. Second, the 70-270 exam is actually one of the more difficult exams in terms of the range of content areas and therefore would be a good one to “get out of the way” early on. Finally, after taking the exam, you will probably have a much better idea of how MCSE exams work and whether or not you really want to pursue your greater MCSE certification.
