[edit section] Answers and Explanations

1. Some questions on the MCSE exam are “analysis based,” and some are “knowledge based.” You will find more of the former than the latter, and this question is no exception. You should notice that there is background information on the issue. Read carefully all of the background information before attempting the question. Based on this question, you should note that she cannot change her credentials, which is the key issue. You should always be able to identify the “key issue” – this is essential to finding the right answer. Next, you should see which of the answers are “bogus” – Microsoft always includes one or event two totally off-base choices. Clearly, choice D is not the answer. Finally, use your knowledge of networking to solve the question. Since she needs to re-login, she must delete her entire use of the server. The answer is A.

2. Key issue: Can’t create a shared folder. Source of issue: Not enough user permission or rights. Correction: Elevate permissions to minimum level to share folders on domain, which is “Power User”. Bogus choices: B, D. Answer is C

3. Key issue: Group policy won’t update on PC. Source of issue: Computer has not pulled new policy. Correction: Force computer to update using GPUPDATE tool. Bogus choices: D. Answer is C

4. This is a new type of question, which is somewhere between analysis and knowledge-based. You need to use both a high degree of your knowledge and some analysis to find a way to “do something.” Here, you are not correcting a problem, so you don’t need to find a key issue. Instead, you need to find a goal and a means of reaching the goal. The goal in this case is to separately monitor performance per application. The means in this case is to run each application in its separate memory space. As always, there will be bogus choices. In this case, the only truly bogus choice is B. Answer is C

5. Key issue: Can’t retrieve data. Source of issue: Deleted user profile. Resolution: Login as a backup operator and un-cipher. Bogus choices: B, E. Answer is D

6. Finally, we arrive at a purely knowledge-based question. Make sure you always read the question fully on these because it will sometimes specify to choose multiple answers (as this question does). For knowledge-based questions, you should first spot the bogus choices, and then use your best judgment to determine the answer. There is no guessing penalty on the MCSE, so feel free to take a stab at it. In this case, the bogus choice is E. You should know that IIS uses ISAPI for Internet applications and that it uses HTTP Keep Alive packets to monitor connections. Answers: A, C

7. Goal: Install software to computer without user intervention and without publishing on Add/Remove Programs. Means: Assign it (force installation) to the computer (without user intervention and to all users). Answer: D

8. Knowledge question. Bogus choices: A, B. Answer: D

9. Key issue: Can’t compress files. Source of issue: Incorrect file system. Correction: Convert to NTFS. Bogus choices: A, B, and C really. Answer D

10. Key issue: Slow performance when dragging after upgrade to XP. Source of issue: PC too slow to run XP visual effects. Solution: Disable translucent dragging effect.

Although this review is far from comprehensive, we hope it has given you some indication of how to pursue these questions and address the issues you will find on the MCSE. We wish you the best of luck and hope you succeed! Thanks for reading the guide.
