OSI (Open Systems Interconnect)

The seven layers are (from to top down),

7. Application

Provide services to the programs that the users themselves can see.

6. Presentation

Presents data from a sending system in a format the the applications on a receiving system can understand.

5. Session

Performs name recognition and security. Manages connections between machines on network.

4. Transport

Has to do with fragmentation & defragmentation, data delivery, & error correction. It also provides end to end communication & control.

3. Network

Routes to information in the network. Determines the route from the source to the destination computer.

2. Data Link

Defines the rules for accesing and using the physical layer. Majority Of functions take place inside NIC.

1. Physical

Dfines the rules for turning the 1's and 0's inot actual electric signals that travel through wires.

Hubs...Physical layer 1

Switches...Data layer 2

Bridges...Data layer 2

Routers...Network layer 3

NICs...Physical layer 1

WAPs...Physical layer 1 & Data layer2
