Here is a little tip for memorizing I/Os for COM 1-4 and LPT 1 and 2:

Just remember this single code: 323232-FFEE77

Then put the first set of numbers in a column.
3
2
3
2
3
2
Now put the second set in a column to the right.
3F
2F
3E
2E
37
27
Now add the number 8 to each one
3F8
2F8
3E8
2E8
378
278

In order, those are the addresses for COM 1-4 and LPT 1 and 2.
COM1: 3F8
COM2: 2F8
COM3: 3E8
COM4: 2E8
LPT1: 378
LPT2: 278

When you sit to take the test they give you scratch paper. Write this out on the scratch paper when you start and you have a little reference for the whole exam.

That's a very nifty trick! Plus my question about getting something to write random information on gets answered too. Thanks for the useful info. smile.gif

while taking the exam you might get a whiteboard instead of scratch paper depending on the facility. When memorizing lists I find it helpful to make a sentence of the first letters of each item in the list. For example

Ports
Paralllel
COM
Serial
USB
IEEE1394

People perpetually consider surprising unicorns intentionally.

Then dump on white board. you can add as much information as you wish with additional sentences. This also helps you remember the entire list as the first letter of each item is accessible. This memnonic device prevents remembering only six of the seven dwarfs syndrome.

for just the com ports the best way to remember them is if the irq is an even number the com port is the odd numbers and the over way around.

e.g.

IRQ 3 ( Odd Number) gos to Com 2 and Com 4 (even Numbers)
IRQ 4 (even number) gos to Com1 and Com3 (odd numbers)

Fantastic tips.. taking the test in December, all of this will be extremely useful.. The acronym in a sentence is used widely, but I have trouble remember all the sentences.. if you say it enough, you finally get it though.. its been used in high school to memorize lots of things!
