Hi, I would like to transfer my installed
programs on my laptop to my desktop
computer. Most of the programs are
in the "Programs group" on the hardrive.
When using XP default backup program,
Will the programs run
again on my other computer . Are all
the necessary files that run normal
programs in the "Programs Group" ? or
are there certain files that get copied
during installation into DIFFERENT DIRECTORIES,
like the Windows directory, making the backup
useless, and the program not able to run on
the other computer ? I am assuming that all
the necessary fles to run this program are in the
directory of the program in the Program group, is
this assumption correct. thanks

I know you can transfer all your files and settings from your Laptop to another computer by using the Files and Transfer Wizard in Windows XP. If you were to install Windows XP in your desktop, you can use sysprep.exe to 'clone' your laptop's HD, and have it installed in the new installation of Windows XP. As far as transferring installed programs, I am unsure about this one. A quick search lead me to this forum -> Transferring Programs... . Hope you find this info helpful.

Years ago I bought "PC Relocator" at CompUSA. It used a parallel cable and was SLOW. Most programs transferred (mot Norton) abd registry entries. When I heard Microsoft had bought and closed the maker, Aloahabob, I got on Amazon and bought a copy of the last known version w/USB transfer. When it arrived, it was still in an unopened squashed box with a CompUSA sticker. I bought a second package w/the USB transfer cable. MS authenticated programs don't transfer well, but my Office 2000 Pro did.

Few days ago i was backing up all of my data to my external hard drive at the end of every day,so I started using the Acronis True Image Home software to do so. I made the first backup yesterday, which understandably took a long time. But now I'm running the first daily backup, as a test, and it says it'll take 4 hours to finish!.So due to all these difficulties i quit Acronis & now i am using Magic Backup online service & really it's great .Magic Backup is so easy to use, and so reliable. Unlike other backup products that perform "scheduled" backups during the middle of the night, Magic Backup is always on the lookout for new or changed files that need to be backed up.So i suggest you to try this.

Acronis is extremely slow, both on the home use and enterprise side. However, it is an extremely good program and works wonderfully, it just goes at its own pace.
As for moving programs to a new OS, good luck. Not that it cant be done, and some programs may transfer without a hiccup, the majority will not transfer, or not transfer properly. I saw someone mentioning the registry entries, which would be one of the main reasons. You would either need to export your registry and import it to the second machine, or reinstall the program on the second machine so the settings could be made correctly in the registry.
