Quick question here,

The examples above are great and I'm sure they will help to memorize which cpu goes with which slot or socket.

However

I can't find anything in the 2006 objectives that says these will be the only ones tested on. What about all of the others?

Any input is appreciated,
Bill

I also can't find anything in the 2006 objectives. Can anyone clarify this. Many thanks.

This is my best shot at some mnemonics.
  • Slot 1: Remember "123C"
Slot 1 is Pentium II, Pentium III and Celeron
  • Slot 2: Remember "23X"
Slot 2 is Pentium II Xeon and Pentium III Xeon
  • Slot A: Remember "A for AMD or Athlon"
    Slot A is AMD Athlon
  • Socket 370: Remember "3 for 370"
Socket 370 is Pentium III, there is only one 300 series socket
  • Socket 603/604: Remember "6X"
Socket 603 and 604 are for Intel Xeon processors only. They are the only 600 series socket.
  • Socket A: Remember "A for AMD or Athlon"
Socket A is for AMD Athlon, Duron, Athlon XP, Athlon XP-M, Athlon MP, and Sempron

appl.gif Thanks, I was about to post a question on this topic when I happened upon this thread. Now I just need to remember it all.

well I sorta found an answer to my question about the differences between 423 and 478.http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/0,,sid9_gci821033,00.html. Not sure it really would of helped on the practice tests I took but hopefully  it will help in the real thing. Hope it helps someone else too.

Thansk for the help with this ...

The sockets and the I/O Addresses are giving me the biggest pain .

considering the pass mark I was just going to strategically guess the answers to those questions ( 25% probabiliy of being correct vs hours of brain hurting memorization which is a really bad way of learning If I cannott associate them with anything  ) .. I would not want to memorize IO addresses ... thats what REFERENCEs are for !  Argh

When I took my A+ exam I wasn't asked about any sockets. You shouldn't memorize all of them. Lots of them aren't used now, what is the reason to memorize all types? It's better to refer to documentation when you're engaged in repairing process. Even If you had memorised all types you would be likely to forget them. But it's up to you.

NOTE: The only CPU specifications on the CompTIA objectives are
slot 1,
slot 2,
slot A,
socket A,
Socket 423 & 478,
Socket 370,
socket 7
hope that helps

Does this apply to the 2003 exam only, or does it still apply to the 2006 objectives?

Thanks.
