Does anyone have a good way to remember the socket types? I'm getting ready to take the test in the next week or so and the sockets are the only thing holding me back. help.gif

I'm right here with u too. Those socket types are killing me. I made a chart and I'm memorizing info about 3 CPU/ Sockets per day.

You should post your chart to help out the other members. a little help goes a long way.

This is my best shot at some mnemonics.
  • Slot 1: Remember "123C"
    Slot 1 is Pentium II, Pentium III and Celeron
  • Slot 2: Remember "23X"
    Slot 2 is Pentium II Xeon and Pentium III Xeon
  • Slot A: Remember "A for AMD or Athlon"
    Slot A is AMD Athlon
  • Socket 370: Remember "3 for 370"
    Socket 370 is Pentium III, there is only one 300 series socket
  • Socket 603/604: Remember "6X"
    Socket 603 and 604 are for Intel Xeon processors only. They are the only 600 series socket.
  • Socket A: Remember "A for AMD or Athlon"
    Socket A is for AMD Athlon, Duron, Athlon XP, Athlon XP-M, Athlon MP, and Sempron
Here is a list of CPU Sockets: CPU socket

These are great, I leave in about a half hour to go take the test and I'm sure these will help!

If you remember the first 3 are slots and the second 3 are sockets all you need to remember is this

1 23C
2 23X
A AMD
3 3
6 X
A AMD

Hi there!

New to the forum... by the way, great place!!

Do you think there could actually be questions on Opteron?

I read some posts around suggesting that to be able to pass the test you basically need to be 'a good tech', so don't think of it as being an engineer, ergo know the stuff but take it easy... isn't opteron used for high-end servers?

hey is not opteron that scares me, you know wot i mean, it'is how far should I go in learning stuff?

Hey everyone,
I just wanted to say this is a great website. I've been browsing in preperation for my core hardware exam (scheduled for Friday morning 8/4). I feel i'm ready to gofor the most part ,but I'm still having some problems with the CPU sockets. I've learned the little trick about slot1=123c...etc. but i still feel uneasy because the list doesn't cover all sockets. Can anyone out ther tell me if they saw any questions concerning older CPU sockets on their exams. Thanks, in advance.

Here is a post from Wali. You can also Read Orignal Post

QUOTE (Wali @ Aug 3 2006, 02:03 PM) *
Socket 5 - Pentium 1, AMD K5
Socket 6 - Pentium 1
Socket 7 - Pentium 1, Pentium MMX, AMD K6
Super Socket 7 - AMD K6-II, AMD K6-III
Socket 8 - Pentium Pro (first l2 cache)
Socket 370 - Pentium 3, Celeron
Socket 423 - Pentium 4
Socket 478 - Pentium 4, Celeron, Pentium 4 Extreme Edition
Socket 479 - Pentium M, Celeron M (M stands for Mobile)
Socket 603, 604 - Xeon
Socket A - Athlon, Duron, Athlon XP, Sempron
Socket 939/940 - Opterons, Athlon 64s (although Athlon 64s probably won't be on the test)
PAC418 - Itanium
PAC611 - Itanium II

SEC
Slot 1 - Pentium 2, Pentium 3, Celeron
Slot 2 - Pentium 2 Xeon, Pentium 3 Xeon
Slot A - Athlon

Those are the most important sockets and slots. After looking at it for a second you can see that all 1 digit sockets were P1s, all 3xx were P3s, and all 4xx were P4s. So instead of remembering "312,432,234,764", you can focus on just remember that P2s were the slot type, P3s were 3xx (300-399)(although they started as a slot type, although I doubt a reference to this will exist on the exam), P4s were 4xx, and P1s were 1 digit (5, 6 and 7). The only exception to the 3xx/4xx rule is the 80486, which was socket 486. But I doubt they'd throw that old old old old stuff in there.

AMD makes it easy on us because they used 1 socket after they jumped off of Intels back. Before they did that, they used socket 5, 7, and super socket 7. Then they went on to slot A and socket A. AMD is covered in just 4 sockets and 1 slot.

Now they could ask for Itanium and Opteron stuff. That's pretty easy since it's the new stuff (and if you're weird like me, you check all the new stuff out even though you can't afford it, so you already know the sockets). Anyway, socket 939/940 were the Opteron Sockets, and Itaniums are the only PAC anythings. Those are all the sockets/slots I believe could appear on your exam. At the very least they're the only ones you really need to know in this day and age.

If you read all of this, maybe write it all down once, I think you'll probably have the sockets and slots memorised.

NOTE: The only CPU specifications on the CompTIA objectives are
slot 1,
slot 2,
slot A,
socket A,
Socket 423 & 478,
Socket 370,
socket 7

hope that helps

A combination of the work of James, Chad and Sujee. This is what I memorized:

1 - 123C ==========
2 - 2X3X ============= Slot
A - AMD/Athlon ======

A - AMD/Athlon ===============
370 - 3&3 ===================== Socket
423 & 478 - 4&4 =================
socket 7 - Old (Pent, MMX, K6) ======

(Edit - formatting problems)
