I recentally had two machines that were both infected with the latest version of XP Antivirus. I removed the infection but when I went to install Nod32 on the machines I got the following message.
"The Windows Installer Service could not be accessed. This can occur if you are running in safe mode, or if the Windows Installer is not correctly installed. Contact your support personnel for assistance."
Reinstalling Windows Installer did nothing and Windows repair had no effect leaving me to think that it's a registry problem.
I ended up doing a full reinstall of Windows but does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this when issue pops up again?

I did get rid of the infection using Spyware Doctor which is very good at removing rogue antiviruses and there are allways are few files that have to be removed manually. Rogue Antivirus software changes registry settings so I would like to know what part prevents software like Nod32 from being installed.
The baffeling is the change targets antivirus programs, everything else installs fine, Just hope to find a solution so I wont have to format and reinstall Windows to get it fixed.
I did think of System Restore but my work has policy of disabeling System Restore whenever we get an infection, something I don't agree with but abide by

Every time I work on a system with that crap on it I search for in and the screen saver that comes with it in the registry to root out all I can find. Its become almost standard practice for me to simply open regedit when I see that stupid pop-up.
But you are right its a persistent lil'thing.
Sorry i'm not more help but I feel your pain
