How different is this test than the A+ exam? I have been studying for the A+ exam for a few months now, and I have applied for a job that says you must have the MCDST certification, or plan to get it within 6 months. I would like to know how prepared I would be after taking the A+ exam.

There should be quite a bit of overlap between the the A+ and MCDST.  However don't think that you can just walk out of your A+ and go and sit this exam.  I strongly suggest that you get yourself a the MCDST objectives and have a good look at what you know and what you still need to study.

Good luck and keep us posted on your progress.

I'd say this test (70-272) is quite a bit different from the A+ test. I'd have to admit the A+ gave me more trouble last year when I took it, mostly because I was new to computers and it covered such a wide swath of material. The tests for the MCDST are more focused on troubleshooting and knowing your XP. Quite a few questions on printer permissions, some domain versus local. You also need to know about the privacy and security tabs and the strength of each setting, (low, medium, high, etc.) The most important thing about the test is to not only know your material, but take your time and work out the answer. The answer is given, you just need to eliminate the incorrect ones. Good Luck!

I am an MCDST certified professional as well.  I have been configuring, building, installing, multiple types of systems throughout the last 13 years.  I thought I could study briefly and go take the test, but as with any in depth test, there is studies that need to be attended to.  Pay attention to the small details in the objective manuals that has been suggested you buy.  They really help to get you prepared for the exam.  Good luck!
