The following is 3 different sections I have put together to help with the OS test.
I compare the Operating Systems 95, 98, 98SE, ME, NT,2000 & XP.
A list of pathway questions that can be confusing to follow.
Common acronyms I needed for OS study.

At the bottom of this posting you will find attactments for each of these sections so you can download the ones you need.

Compare 95, 98, 98SE, ME, NT, 2000, & XP

All these Operating Systems can be basically put in 2 groups.
First there's 95, 98 & 98SE, together called 9x, and ME.
Second there's NT, 2000 & XP.
Now we can start to break them down even more.

98 & ME are build from 95
2000 & XP are build from NT

Windows 95 supports Fat 16
Windows 95 OSR2 was the first Microsoft OS to support Fat32

Windows 98 does not support Internet Connection Sharing
Windows 98 SE does support Internet Connection Sharing

Windows ME introduced System Restore

9x & ME boot with IO.SYS, MSDOS.SYS & COMMAND.COM
NT, 2000 & XP boot with NTLDR, BOOT.INI & NTDETECT.COM

Windows NT supports FAT16, NTFS & HPFS(forOS/2)
Windows 2000 supports FAT16, FAT32, & NTFS

Windows 9x/ME do not offer system security
Windows NT, 2000 & XP offers security

For clean install for 9x/ME run SETUP
For 2000/XP run either WINNT or WINNT32

HKEY_DYN_DATA is not present in NT/2000/XP

Virtual Memory swapfile for 9x/ME is called WIN386.SWP
Virtual Memory in NT/2000/XP is called PAGEFILE.SYS

In NT/2000/XP (this will sound backwards)
Boot files are stored in the system partition
OS files are held in the boot partition

FAT16 & FAT32 offer no file security
NTFS offers file & folder security

Device Manager is not included in Windows NT

You cannot upgrade to NT from 95 or 98

Optimizing 2000/XP options
Go to My Computer|Properties|Advanced|Performance Options (2000)
Go to My Computer|Properties|Advanced|Performance Settings (XP)

2000/ME/XP uses My Network Places
9x/NT uses Network Neighborhood

2000 file name, up to 215 characters (computer name up to 63)
NT file name, up to 255 characters
(9x file names, up to 255 characters)

2000 supports PnP
NT 4.0 did not support PnP

NT uses Disk Administrator
2000 uses Disk Management

Command Line for 2000/XP is called Command Prompt
Command Line for 9x/ME is called MS-DOS prompt

System Root folder for NT/2000 is named WINNT
System Root folder for 9x/ME/XP (yes XP) is named WINDOWS

To find IP address with 9x/ME is WINIPCFG
To find IP address with NT/2000/XP is IPCONFIG

Windows XP Professional has Backup & Restore Wizard
Windows XP Home does not
For Windows NT 4.0 & 2000 it's called Backup

You must know this stuff for the exam!

This is by far the best post we have had in a long long while. I just gave it 5/5 stars. It covers a question type area that the website has not been strong in, so it was much needed. I am going to pin this. clap.gif v.gif notworthy.gif

Great Notes !!!
Thanks Spy. I have been fumbling around for the last couple of days trying to figure out how to get started on writing these miscellaneous pathways. Now I have a really nice sheet to work off of. Also the comparison and acronym charts are very helpful. I also give this 5 out of 5. It came along just when I needed it most.
Just finished hardware and trying to get the OS stuff in my head. notworthy.gif

Great notes! I saw alot of that stuff on my OS test (which I failed by about 3 questions). Hopefully by reading this I'll pass the exam next weekend! Also, I studied so hard to remember the IRQ's,DMA's,error codes and saw pretty much no questions pertaining to them! Hopefully my next test will have those on there! At least I'll know those!

Your next OS test will be all together different from the one you failed. My first OS test was loaded with pathway questions and the next was loaded with 2000 & min reg., even had a couple on ME. Good Luck on the retest!

Awesome compilation of information. I will be taking my test next Monday and this is my new "Memorize right before I walk in to the testing center" info sheets. I have been studying for over a month for the OS and I plan on passing.

Thanks for putting this together!

Awesome. I'm definitely making some notes/cramsheets out of this stuff..... Hopefully it'll do me more good than the discombobulated notes I took in the OS portion of my class <_<

Thanks, this is great! Something you might like to add though:

MSCONFIG

Windows 95: (NOT available - doesn't have it!)
Windows 98/98SE/ME: YES, location is C:\WINDOWS\System
Windows NT4/2000: (NOT available - doesn't have it!)
Windows XP: YES, location is C:\WINDOWS\PCHealth\HelpCtr\Binaries

Also need to check the differences between the different tabs in each OS
that has it - can anyone here look into this? Thanks!

Hope this helps smile.gif

clap.gif Thank you so much for taking the time to do that. This one area that has been kind of confusing to me because I am such a visual person. Put me in front of the desktop, and I know how to get there. Without that though I am lost! This helps a whole bunch. THANK YOU!!!
