I'll add more as and when I get time.

Hi
Is there a way to attach links to attachments, eg Word, PowerPoint slides, etc?

Rant
Over the years I've seen many "experts" confuse terminology regarding bits and bytes.
For the record:
bit = b
byte = B
Just now, I've been watching CBTNuggets Network+ video 17 and the guy said megabits per second and gigabit Ethernet but wrote MB and GB respectively.
Mb = megabit, MB = megabyte
Gb = gigabit, GB = gigabyte.
I've seen it happen before on some CBT videos and elsewhere, and I've tried to get in touch with the author(s) and ask them to correct these mistakes.
What have I done today?
Network+
First of all in the morning whilst skimming through Mike Meyer's Net+ Passport book I came across the Port numbers topic and realised my weakness regarding TCP/IP and UDP protocols and what ports they use. I shall make a table soon and will post here. [Domain 2.10, 2.11, 2,12 of exam objectives]
I've just made a first pass-through of the CBTNuggets Net+ videos 15-17:
15 - Internet Access Technologies (POTS/PSTN, xDSL, Broadband Cable, Satellite)
16 - Remote Access Protocols (SLIP/PPP, PPPoE, RAS, RDP, ICS)
17 - Server Remote Connectivity (RAS Server Connection examples, NOS Remote Access Services, NOS Solutions, Client Connectivity)
The first pass-thru is at fast speed. Once I've been thru all the videos, I shall go back and go thru all the videos again, this time taking notes.
See you next time.

First of all, let me give you a background on myself.
I am in my mid-40's but still feel that there's a lot of life left in this ol' dog.
I have been using computers since 1978 but only really got into them in the early 90's . My first PC was an Amstrad 1512 - no hdd & 512k RAM, which I used for my Open University studies.
In the mid-90's I started my own home-based PC business, whilst studying for my BENG Electronics degree (didn't complete).
In '98 I went back to university and in 2001 graduated with an 2:1 Honours degree (BSc or Bachelors) Engineering-IT but could not get a job anywhere because of my age. Some of the students on my course (who obtained the same or lower grade of degree) got good graduate jobs and have relatively high paid careers. I was left on the scrap-heap (dumped).
After being unemployed for several months, I eventually got a job as a COBOL programmer. It was extremely low paid (I was on £9Kpa, whilst some of my ex-classmates were earning £25K+) and it was boring and tedious so I left after 3 months.
After being unemployed for a while I got a job teaching basic IT (actually MS Office) at the local prison (I already had teaching qualifications and some experience - I had previously taught night classes in Visual Basic and Web Design at the local college whilst still at Uni.) and I have been there ever since. It's a dead-end job and there is no job security or any job-related benefits (such as holiday/vacation pay). I get paid for the hours I teach and nothing more - don't take class, don't get paid.
In 2003, I went back to uni (cut my hours at work) to do an Advanced Masters degree (MSc Distributed Systems Integration). I've completed my taught modules, however, I still need to do my Final Project/Report/Thesis "Wireless Network Security for SMBs) - as an aside, if there is anyone out there who has put in wireless network security in small-to-medium organisations then I would appreciate some guidance.
*Note: both my degree courses included a lot of programming and scripting content, inc: Java, C++, C, Assembler, Visual Basic, ASP, JSP, JavaScript, etc etc.
Whilst researching for my project, I came across Planet3's (www.cwnp.com) Wireless Cert programme (CWNP) and thought that I might as well go for these. Last month (July 07) I passed their Wireless# exam with a score of 85%. I will go for the CWNA next then the CWSP. The only thing is that there aren't many jobs advertised in the UK requiring the CWNA/CWSP. Hence I'm going for Cisco as a ticket out of my current job...
I started looking at the Cisco CCNA at the beginning of the year and was preparing to go to India for the Koenig boot camp, however, my employers would not give me time out (they wanted 3 week's notice), so I missed it.
I bought Chris Bryant's online course for $97 and have been using that plus the following for my studies:
Sybex CCNA 5th Ed (Todd Lammle)
Cisco Self-Study CCNA Certification Library - haven't looked at yet
Prep-Logic Mega Guide (also bought their Practice Exam, which I'll use later)
ProProfs Intro & ICND Guides
CBT Nuggets CCNA CBTs (haven't looked at yet)
Recently, I bought some routers (Cisco 5401x1, 5404x4) but need to get some leads to set up the labs.
I was ready and geared up to do some Sunday classes in London, run by Joe Spoto @ www.commsupport.co.uk. Contact Joe and tell him mrlogic0 sent you - he'll look after you. This guy knows what he is talking about and best of all the course is only £499 for 5 days! One of my colleagues also wanted to do it but by the time he got back to me to confirm, the classes were full so we missed them. I am planning to go there in October, with a view to sitting the CCNA (640-801) exam by November 2nd. If due to some unforeseen cirumstance i am unable to complete the exam by then, then I shall go for the new exams (which includes the 604-802 CCENT exam).
** Note - Joe is not paying me to say good things about him and his course. It's just that he seemed such a 'nice bloke' on the 'phone and his course seems such excellent value-for-money.
In studying for the CCNA, I thought that I might as well do the CompTIA Network+ as I need the broad background to help me with my CCNA.
Apart from the ProProfs Net+ study Guide, I am also using the following:
- Mike Meyer's Network+ Passport (old version)
- PrepLogic Mega Guide & Practice Exam
- Bill Ferguson's Network+ Fast Pass 2005, which I am converting to PowerPoint slides
- CBT Nuggets Network+ CBT
- VTC Network+ CBT
amongst others.
I've been through the VTC videos and am on video 12 of the CBT Nuggets. Please don't rely on just one of these as they don't cover all of the material you need. Use one or two CBTs and the other materials I've listed - this will give you input from different angles and help cover all the bases.
I suggest that Forums such as this (ProProfs) are some of the best resources you can find. You get advice and answers to problems. And it's all FREE!
Anyway, I shall post the Net+ slides and some Flash Cards soon.
I shall update my blogs whenever I've done some studies and the results of those studies: what I learnt, how I feel etc.
I hope this is enough for my first ever blog anywhere???
