The sharks are some of Earth’s most successful predators. They have been swimming the world’s oceans, virtually unchanged, since the time of the dinosaurs, and have spread to every ocean on the globe. Sharks owe their success to a few evolutionary adaptations, all perfectly geared towards hunting. Their most obvious feature is a mouth bristling with sharp teeth that are constantly being replaced.

Sharks lose a tooth about once a week, but they are regrown almost immediately, so a single shark can actually have thousands of teeth in its lifetime! They also have a strong sense of smell and can detect even a tiny amount of blood in the water. Once they sense the blood, they will automatically swim toward an injured animal and try to make an easy meal of it. Although sharks are fearsome predators, most of them pose very little risk to humans.

For one thing, sharks are cautious and even shy – they will pursue smaller prey actively, but to most sharks a large animal like a human would cause way too much trouble. As long as you respect them and keep your distance, you are very unlikely to be harmed by a shark.
