Bacteria make up a large domain of prokaryotic microorganisms, and they are typically a few micrometers in length. They also have a number of shapes, ranging from spheres to rods and spirals. They inhabit soil, water, acidic hot springs, radioactive waste, and deep portions of the Earth’s crust. There are typically 40 million bacterial cells in a gram of soil and a million bacterial cells in a milliliter of fresh water. There is such as extensive amount of bacteria on Earth that it forms a biomass that exceeds that of all plants and animals!
