Front Back
What is all matter made of?
Atoms
What are the 3 types of subatomic particles in atoms?
Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons.
Where are protons and neutrons located in the atom?
In the nucleus
Where are electrons located in an atom?
In orbits around the nucleus
Define electricity
A form of energy related to the presence and distribution of electrons in an object.
Define static electricity
Electrical charges that are at rest.
Define electrostatics
The study of static electricity
What does it mean for an object to be charged?
Any object that has more or less electrons than it normally would have.
How do objects become charged?
When electrons are transferred to or from another object.
What do charged objects do?
They exert an electric force that will either attract or repel other objects.
State the law of electric charges.
1. Objects with like charges will repel each other.
2. Objects with opposite charges will attract each other.
3. Electric force increases with increasing electrical charges and decreases with increasing distance.
Why are neutral objects attracted to charged objects?
Induced charge separation
What happens when a negatively charged rod approaches a neutral object?
As the negatively charged rod moves closer to the bal lthe electrons move to the right (away from rod) leaving the positively charged protons on the left(closest to the rod). So the left side is now attracted to the rod.
What happens when a positively charged rod approaches a neutral object?
As the rod moves closer, the elctrons attract to the protons in the rod. (The protons in the ball cannot move.)
How do objects become charged?
1. Charging by Friction (Rubbing)
2. Charging by Conduction (Touching)
3. Charging by Induction
