What is the action of local anesthesia?
Blocks entry of Na ions into neurons- Neurons can't fire without influx of Na aka sodium channel blockers
What is the purpose of Xylocaine (lidocaine with epinephrine added)?
The addition of epi constricts blood vessels and keeps the anesthetic solution in the area longer
What class does lidocaine (Xylocaine) belong?
Local Anesthetic Amide
What is the only gas routinely used for anesthesia?
Nitrous Oxide
What is a field block (infiltration) ?
Regional anesthesia by encircling the operative field with injections of a local anesthetic
Where is the epidural space?
Above the dura mater. It is the outermost of the 3 meninges
What is the #1 nursing priority while the patient is under general anesthesia?
Patient Safety
What class is lidocaine (Xylocaine) in?
Local Anesthetic Amide
What class is nitrous oxide (NOS) in ?
General Anesthetic, Gas
What is a common adverse effect of nitrous oxide following administration?
Nausea and vomiting
What class is halothane (Fluothane) in?
Volatile Anesthetic
What are the side effects of halothane (Fluothane)?
Dysrhythmias, drowsiness, vomiting, nausea myocardial depression, marked hypotension, pulmonary vasoconstriction, hepatotoxicity
What is malignant hyperthermia?
Rare but potentially fatal adverse effect triggered by all inhaled anesthetics. It causes muscle rigidity and severe temp elevation (up to 43'C). Greatest risk is when halothane is used with succinylcholine.
What class is thiopental (Pentothal) in?
IV Anesthetic, ultra-short acting barbiturate
What is nueroleptanalgesia?
State of conciousness, though insenstive to pain and unconnected with surroundings. Produced by Innovar (premixture of fentanyl and droperidol). Similar state is produced with ketamine (Ketalar).
