The external reproductive organs of the man or woman.
Genitalia
A term for the external female genitalia, including the mons veneris, labia majora, labia minora, clitoris, vaginal opening, and urethral opening.
Vulva
The soft layer of fatty tissue that overlays the pubic bone in women. It becomes covered with pubic hair during puberty.
Mons veneris
Two elongated folds of skin extending from the mons to the perineum in women. Its outer surfaces become covered with pubic hair during puberty.
Labia majora
Two hairless elongated folds of skin located between the labia majora in women. They meet above the clitoris to form the clitoral hood.
Labia minora
Technically, the entire pelvic floor, but more commonly used to refer to the hairless bit of skin between the anus and either the vaginal opening (in women) or the scrotum (in men).
Perineum
The part of the labia minora that covers the clitoris in women.
Clitoral hood
Glands located at the base of the labia minora in women that contribute a small amount of an alkaline fluid to their inner surfaces during sexual arousal.
Bartholin's glands
A small, elongated erectile structure in women that develops form the same embryonic tissue as the penis. It has no known function other than to focus sexual sensations.
Clitoris
A term used to refer to the area between the two labia minora.
Vestibular area
A ring of sphincter muscles that surrounds the vaginal opening in women or the root of the penis in men.
Bulbocavernosus muscle
Structures surrounding the vaginal oping that fill with blood during sexual arousal, resulting in swelling of the tissues and a narrowing of the vaginal opening.
Vestibular bulbs
The thin membrane that partially covers the vaginal opening in many sexually inexperienced women. Its presence or absence, however, is really a very poor indicator of prior sexual experience.
Hymen
The passageway from the bladder to the exterior of the body. In men, it also serves as a passageway for semen during ejaculation.
Urethra
In women, glands that provide milk for infants; located at the front of the chest.
