The Christian Church
A plainchant consisting of simple recitation on a monotone, except for small variations at the beginning and ending of phrases
Gregorian Recitation
AKA Gregorian chant, this was the system for expressing the religious texts at church services.
Plainchant
A more melodic treatment of the plainchant, and at times may alternate b/w 2 parts.
Antiphon
A more elaborative kind of melody than the antiphon, usually utilizing larger vocal ranges.The melodies may be repeated possibly w/ variations
Sequence
A characteristic of plainchant that states plainchants have no clear established meter. The rhythm is free.
Nonmetrical
When plainchants are not under the guide of the modern major/minor scale system- they use a different arrangement of whole and half steps
Medieval Modes
The combination of 2 or more melodies played or sung at the same time
Ployphony
Earliest type of polyphony. Traditional plainchant melody to which someone has added another melody sung simultaneously to the same words.
Organum
A later medieval polyphony which differ from organum in many ways
Motet
Repeated several times in a chant rather than complete thoughts delivered in longer melodies
Fragments
Instrumental dances that are one line pieces in which the same or similar music phrases are repeated several times in varied forms
