FrontBack
Largest artery in the body.

aorta
Small artery.

arteriole
Largest type of blood vessel; carries blood away from the heart to all parts of the body.

artery
Specialized muscle fibers connecting the atrium with the ventricles and transmitting electrical impulses between them.

atrioventricular bundle (bundle of His)
Specialized tissue at the base of the wall between the two upper heart chambers. Electrical impulses pass from the pacemaker through the AV node the bundle of His.

atrioventricular node
One of two upper chambers of the heart.

atrium (plural: atria)
Smallest blood vessel. Materials pass to and from the bloodstream through the thin capillary walls.

capillary
Gas (waste) released by body cells, transported via veins to the heart, and then to the lungs for exhalation.

carbon dioxide (CO2)
The blood vessels that branch from the aorta and carry oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle.

coronary arteries
Blood that is oxygen-poor.

deoxygenated blood
Relaxation phase of the heartbeat.

diastole
Inner lining of the heart.

endocardium
Innermost lining of blood vessels.

endothelium
Valve between the left atrium and the left ventricle of the heart bicuspid valve.

mitral valve
Abnormal heart sound caused by improper closure of the heart valves.

murmur
Muscle layer of the heart.

myocardium
Specialized nervous tissue in the right atrium that begins the heartbeat; also called the sinoatrial node.

pacemaker
Sac-like (double layered) membrane surrounding the heart.

pericardium
Artery carrying oxygen-poor blood from the heart to the lungs.

pulmonary artery
Flow of blood from the heart to the lungs and back to the heart.

pulmonary circulation
Positioned between the right ventricle and the pulmonary artery.

pulmonary valve
One of two pairs of vessels carrying oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium of the heart.

pulmonary vein
Beat of the heart as felt through the walls of the arteries.

pulse
Partition; in the cardiovascular system, between the right and left sides of the heart.

septum (plural: septa)
Pacemaker of the heart.

sinoatrial node
Instrument to measure blood pressure.

sphygmomanometer
Flow of blood from the body cells to the heart and back out from the heart to the cells.

systemic circulation
Contraction phase of the heartbeat.

systole
Thin-walled vessel that carries blood from body tissues and lungs back to the heart. It contains valves to prevent backflow of blood.

vein
Largest vein in the body. The superior and inferior venae cavae return blood to the right atrium of the heart.

vena cava
vessel
