What are the two states of metabolism?
Absorptive (fed) and post absorptive(fasted)
What is the absorptive state?
"FED STATE".period of time following a meal when the products of digestion are being absorbed, used, and stored.
Insulin is dominant in which state?
Absorptive state (fed)
What happens during the first four hours following a meal? Where is most of the energy derived from at this time?
absorptive (fed) state- a steady movement of glucose, aa's, and some fatty acids into the bloodstream.*most energy is derived from carbs at this time*
How is energy stored?
Some glucose is stored in liver as glycogen
What are triglycerides made up of?
Fatty acids and glycerol
What is metabolism?
Sum of all the biochemical reactions in the body
What is an anabolic reaction? Do they required ATP?
small molecules --> large moleculesconsume more energy than they producerequires ATPsynthetic reaction
What are catabolic reactions? Do they require or make ATP?
Degrative metabolic reactionproduce more energy than they consumeyield ATP.
How do the brain and muscles use fats?
Muscles- can burn fats very efficiently to generate ATP
brain CANNOT use fatty acids as fuel
Where is the feeding center?
Lateral hypothalamus
Where is the satiety center?
Ventromedial hypothalamus
Increasing food intake increases the secretion of what?
leptin secretion
What happens to the carbohydrates in the fed/absorptive state?
A. some glucose stored as glycogen in liver and muscleb. most glucose stored as fat in adipose tissuec. absorbed primarily as glucose
What happens to proteins in the fed/absorptive state?
(a) absorbed primarily as amino acids(b) most amino acids go to tissues for protein synthesis(c) if needed for energy, amino acids converted in liver to intermediates for aerobic metabolism(d) excess converted to fat and stored in adipose tissue
