Describe the Structure and Function of the- Testes
- paired organs that develop with in the abdomen of a developing fetus - scrotum maintains testes at a lower temp. than abdominal cavity ->necessary for producing viable sperm - contain seminiferous tubules
Describe the Structure and Function of the- Seminiferous Tubules
-coiled tubules packed in the lobes of the testes that produce sperm
Where and what do sertoli cells do?
-In the Seminiferous Tubules -Nourish developing sperm
Interstitial cells are located where? And produce what?
-Seminiferous tubules -Testosterone
Sperm consist of what three main parts?
Head - tip fo the head is called the acromosome cap Midpiece- contains mitochondria that provide energy Tail- composed of flagella to provide movement
Semen consists of what material?
1. Sperm (carries genetic info) 2. Water (Medium for sperm to sim in) 3. Nutrients (Fructoses and glucose for energy) 4. Mucous (Lubricant and protection) 5. Bicarbonate (Neutralize acidity of vagina) 6. Proteins and amino acids (allows sperm to coagullate) 7. Prostaglandis (hormones that cause the uterus to contract)
Which components of semen are produced in/released from the Seminal Vesicle?
Nutrients, Proteins and AMino Acids and Prostaglandis
What component of semen is produced in the Cowper's gland?
Mucous
Where is bicarbonate released from?
Prostate gland
What is ejaculation?
The process in which semen is forced out of the penis.
What is GnRH? And what role does it play in the male reproductive system?
-Gonadotropic-Releasing Hormone -Hypothalamus controls testes by releasing GnRH -Triggers anterior pituitary to produce FSH and ICSH
What is FSH? And what role does it play in the male reproductive system?
-Follicle Stimulating Hormone -Promotes spermatogenesis
What is spermatogenesis?
-A process involving meiosis (cell division that reduces the number of chromosomes by half) -Takes about 9-10 weeks
What is ICSH? And what is its role in the male reproductive system?
-Interstitial cell-stimulating hormone - controls production of testosterone -causes increased testotsterone levels
What does inhibin do in the male reproductive system?
-released by Sertoli cells as sperm are made that sends negative feedback to teh anterior pituitary and hypothalamus to tell tehm to stop producing hormones
