Most abundant skeletal cartilages. Grant support w/ flexability and resiliance. Appears glassy when freshly exposed.

1 articular- one the ends of most bones at movable joints. 2 costal- ribs and sternum. 3 respiratory- larynx (voicebox) and other respiratory -passages. 4 nasal- supports external nose.

|
Dense irregular connective tissue that surrounds the avascular cartilage

Appositional Growth
|
"growth from outside" cartilage forming cells in surrounding perichondrium secrete new matrix against external face of existing tissue

Interstitial Growth

"growth from inside" lacunae bound chondrocytes divide and secrete new matrix, expanding the cartilage from within
