Orientalizing Period
700-630/600 BC-Greeks travelled in ships all around the Mediterranean. Their art moved, contact with Eastern and more ancient cultures. Egypt, Oriental area, monster gods. Saw Egypt’s use of monumental architecture in stone. Greeks at the time were using mudbricks. Greeks were inspired.

Mantiklos Apollo 700-680 BCFound at Thebes. 8-9 inches tall. Shrine of Apollo – god of art, music, poetry. Used as offering to the Gods. Everything is quite angular, but out of proportion. Late 600s BC. Draws in/molds in muscles. Much more 3D than on vases. Trying for naturalism, not really succeeding
