Associative property
The sum or product stays the same when the grouping of the addends or factors is changed.
EX: (6+4) +2 = 6 + (4+2) or (6x4) x 2 = 6 x (4x2)
Common denominators
When two fractions have the same denominator, they are said to be this.
Commutative property
The sum or the product stays the same when the addend or factors order is changed.
EX: 6+4 = 4+6 OR 6x4 = 4x6
Compatible numbers
A pair of numbers that are easy to work with mentally.
25 and 70 are compatible numbers for the problem 22 + 73.
Compensatory numbers
These numbers are used to adjust numbers in a
computation after use of compatible numbers.
Compute
To find a numerical result - usually by adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing.
Distributive property
When one of the factors of a product is written as a sum, multiplying each addend before adding does not change the product. 3 x (4+5) = (3 x 4) + (3 x 5)
Equivalent
Having the same value.
