Are you a fellow craft?
I am, try me.
How will you be tried?
By the square.
Why by the square?
Because it is one of the working tools of this degree.
What is a square?
An angle of ninety degrees, or one fourth part of a circle.
Where were you made a fellow craft?
In a just and lawfully constituted lodge of fellow crafts.
Where were you prepared?
In a room adjacent to a just and lawfully constituted lodge of fellow crafts.
How were you prepared?
By being divested of all metallic substance, neither naked or clothed, barefoot or shod, aproned as an entered apprentice, hoodwinked, and a cable tow placed twice around my right arm. In this condition, I was conducted to a door by the hand of a brother.
Being hoodwinked how did you know it to be a door?
By first meeting resistance, later gaining admission.
How did you gain admission?
By giving three distinct knocks from without which were answered by a like number from within.
To what do these knocks allude?
To the three precious jewels of a fellow craft, the attentive ear, the instructive tongue, and the faithful breast. The attentive ear receives the sound from the instructive tongue and the mysteries of freemasonry are safely lodged in the repository of a faithful breast.
The door being opened, what was asked from within?
Who comes here? Entered apprentice John Locklear who has been regularly initiated entered apprentice, served a just and lawful time and now seeks more light by being passed to the degree of fellow craft.
What were you then asked?
Was this an act of my own free will and accord, was I well qualified, was I duly and truly prepared, had I made suitable proficiency in the preceding degree, all which being answered in the affirmative, I was then asked by what further right or benefit did I expect to obtain this important privilege. By benefit of the pass?
Had you the pass?
I had not, my friend and guide gave it for me.
What were you then told?
The pass was right, wait with patience until the worshipful master had been informed of my request and his answer returned.
What was his answer?
Let the candidate enter this worshipful lodge of fellow crafts and be received in due and ancient form.
